Men’s Fashion For a Change…

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

I don’t do a lot about men’s fashion for the obvious reason being I’m not a man, but I also am not bias and for most women, unfortunately first impressions can mean everything.

When it comes to men’s fashion, let’s be honest, they aren’t interested.  Throw on a pair of jeans and the classic t-shirt and they think they have the perfect outfit. But surprisingly more and more guys these days are starting to care about their appearance and branch out, adopting the newest trends.

Bold Colored Shorts It’s time to hang up the boring khakis and venture out of the box just a little.  Tangerine, salmon, canary yellow, electric blue etc don’t have to just be for women’s palette. Guys like to stand out too and what better way to do this than to adopt the bold color trend. Start out by getting a colored pair of shorts and easing your way into the trend by pairing them with a neutral color shirt.

1.        Penguin Whitfield Fit Blue-South Moon Under $65.00

2.      AE Prep Length Twill Green Surf-American Eagle $34.50

3.      Quicksilver Down Under Shorts Red-South Moon Under $55.00

Polos If you’re guy isn’t into branching too far out from their classic t-shirt attire, the polo was invented. This adds more class and can dress up a pair of jeans easily. If you are already wearing a colored pair of shorts stay with the neutral color polos, but if not, go brighter.

1.        Custom Fit Mercerized Polo-Ralph Lauren $89.50

2.        Solid A87 Polo White-Aero $10.00

3.        Classic Fit Weathered Polo Bike Orange-Ralph Lauren $85.00
Washed-Out Denim It’s true, the jeans your man repeatedly wears over and over as they begin to get lighter and more washed out is actually the new trend for 2012. And good news, men are starting to steer away from wearing skinny leg jeans they borrowed from their girlfriends.

1.          Dillon Conductor Jeans-PACSUN $49.50

2.         Straight fit jean medium worn wash-JCrew- $96.00

3.         Levi’s 511 Chalked Gray Jeans PACSUN $58.00

With any style there are always some guidelines, the do’s and don’ts if you will, and men’s fashion is no exception.

Do’s

Wrinkle Look-Obviously don’t get too carried away but a slight wrinkle makes for a more laid back summery look.

Brights-Be confident, comfortable and bold. Who doesn’t want to stand out to impress the ladies of summer?

Artsy Glasses- There is something appealing about the sexy geek look. Embrace it.

Jeans that fit-No one wants to see your backside, the color of your boxers or your crack. Get a pair that fit. Makes for a more flattering look.

Don’ts

Mandals-No, no, no! Get some flip-flops. They are cheaper and look nicer otherwise, stick to sneakers. And please, no socks with any kind of sandal or flip flop.

Jorts- Also known as jean shorts. Jeans are not meant to be turned into shorts and adding a belt, cell phone clip or wallet in your back pocket will not help the situation. And not that I should even need to say this, but corduroys are no exception to the cut off catastrophe.

Obscene Slogan T-Shirts- No one cares nor believes the message and arrow that is pointing to below your belt. Obviously, if you feel the need to broadcast it, then most likely it is false advertisement. The only good thing when you buy a slogan t-shirt with an offensive saying on it is that us girls don’t have to waste our time engaging in any kind of verbal conversation with you.

Nylons? Closed Toe Shoes? Oh you have one of THOSE jobs…

Thursday, September 27th, 2012
So I have traded in my waitress job for a new “big girl” desk job. Although it has its ups and downs, I am really loving what I am doing.  But with every “big girl” job comes a couple more trades. The attire: business professional dress code. Traded in the short khaki shorts, polka dot matching tank tops, and t-shirts I once wore while waiting tables at the beach and adopted high heels, pencil skirts, and nylons (yes, I said nylons). At some point in your life you will have that one day where you have an interview, an internship, a business meeting or like me, a new job. You want people to take you seriously so where do you start? Your appearance.

At first I will admit I was not looking forward to my new wardrobe. No tank tops, no capris or shorts, if I wear a dress, nylons must be worn, no open toed shoes, and the list continues forever. One lady even told me, “Oh you have one of THOSE jobs.” Yes, yes I do. But slowly each day I am finding trendy ways to still be young, fashionable and expressive while still maintaining the business professional look. So I am going to provide you some helpful suggestions to being professional while still remaining stylish while you prepare for your next interview, internship or “big girl” job!

1. Blazers and suits are in and they are cute!
We’ve seen them on the runways and celebrities have been wearing them more frequently to achieve a sharp professional look. There are so many options when it comes to suits and blazers. The color, the cut, and the style can all make a complete difference in making you look trendy and not… well, old lady. But one thing about suits are that sometimes purchasing one is just as expensive as paying your rent! Advice? Mix and match your pieces. Take a blazer and match it with something you already have; a pair of slacks, a cute printed skirt or even some fun shorts (of appropriate length of course).

1.
2.3.
1. Rock & Republic Embellished Linen Blazer Kohl’s $56.00
2. 212 Collection Solid Blazer Kohl’s $38.99
3. Rib Panel Bodycon Skirt Forever 21 $13.80

4.5.

The Professional Dress
For me it has been a challenge. All of my dresses are above my knees, strapless, or cut a little too low for dress code standards. My first thought was that I was never going to wear a dress to work. It just wasn’t going to happen especially when I have to wear nylons. But then that one sunny day came around and there was not a chance I was leaving in pants. I have even worn my strapless dresses with a cute cardigan or sweater. And I found they actually do make cute, fashionable, professional dresses.

First, the dresses.

6.
1. Sweet As Can Be Dress ModCloth $49.99
2. Floridian Flirtation Dress ModCloth $44.99
3. LC Lauren Conrad Butterfly Shirtdress Set Kohl’s $47.60
4.  Eye to Eyelet Dress ModCloth $49.99
5. Belted Colorblock Dress Forever 21 $24.80
6. Sleeveless Patch Pocket Shirtdress Forever 21 $27.80

Now if you are like me and cannot wear strapless or have to have some sort of sleeve there are alternatives while still being able to be you!

1.
2.
3.
3. Cardigan H&M $17.95

Now onto the shoes. This is the one area that allows you some creativity and fun, especially if you have a very strict dress code policy. First suggestion, invest in a comfortable pair of both black heels, and brown/nude as they can go with any outfit without much thought. If you are like me and have to do any kind of walking during the day you want to be comfortable but still look all business. Occasionally if I have a meeting or have to see someone important I wear heels, (makes you look more professional), but for the most part it is flats or low heels all the way.

Flats

MOSSIMO® WOMENS ULTRASOFT COCOON SWEATER – ASSORTED COLOR$22.9

2. Peep Toe Flat Target $19.99

Heels

3.

2. JustFab Women’s Stefania – Taupe $59.99

As much as everyone loves wearing their skinny jeans, hooded sweatshirts, and t-shirts sometimes life requires you to to dress for the real adult world. Your first impression is going to be the one to make the mark. Remember you can still look professional and liven up your business attire in a trendy, conservative manner.

Nothing says fiesta like the bright bold colors of summer

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Most of you don’t know but I have been in Puerto Rico for the last month and a half. Working? No. Purely vacation and play. (Everyone hates me already, I know.) Needless to say the lack of blogging was unacceptable and I plan to make up for it.

Surprisingly, I came back to rather warm temperatures and I am not complaining. Even though it is only  March and not quite time to bust out the bathing suits we are going to pretend I am still living the island life and focus on the Spanish designers for 2012, and their use of bright colors.

Nothing screams ‘fiesta’ like bright colors and patterns. This is one of my favorite trends especially coming home with a nice dark tan! I love the way bright colors look against my skin. Many designers use this technique to really make a piece stand out.

Ana Locking
One of my new favorite Spanish designers, Ana Locking in her new line “Under Beauty” uses color to start out soft in the beginning, gradually intensifying until it explodes. Locking says,  ”The shadows of under beauty contribute so that light will reflect better.” Locking’s technique is to play with a sharp execution of silhouettes as well as colorblocking. Take a look at her line this season.

Kina Fernandez
Also a very talented and a favorite, Kina uses a few of my favorite colors like turquoise and coral incorporated into her Spring/Summer 2012 line. She uses draping in a way that makes you feel something when you look at one of her pieces. The way each piece so easily flows reminding me of a summer breeze or a calm ocean current.

TCN
This line can be best described with the words ‘fun,’ ‘funky,’ and ‘urban’ all at the same time. I like this line because it is more of a laid back style but still maintains a substantial amount of spunk. TCN uses an array of colors such as aqua, coral, rose pink and mustard intertwining them together for the perfect combination. This line is very subtle, but the bright colors help to bring out its spring/summer attitude.

Colorblocking is definitely the leading fashion trend for Spring 2012. So when you are preparing for the spring and summer months and are trying to play it safe with that little black dress, step outside of your comfort zone, pretend you are on vacation and go for something that will lift your mood; something bright. Go for the oranges, corals, and aqua colors and make a bold, bright statement this season.

Tiffany Blue? Peacock teal? Turquoise? Whatever! Its taking over!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Make way! This season, the brights are taking over and proving they are not just for the summer months and one of my favorite bright colors this year; turquoise. This is one hue I find to be universally flattering on every woman and one that you can mix with just about any palette. Most people think of turquoise in relation to resort beachwear, but this spring color has swept over the fashion runway with designers like Luca Luca and Nicole Miller.

For those of you that cannot quite grasp the colorblocking trend with bright hues try accentuating with a turquoise accessory like a clutch, necklace or scarf to make an outfit really pop! Take a look at celebrities Kourtney Kardashian and Heidi Klum’s turquoise accessory piece.

So don’t wait until summer to bust out the brights and be a little daring. Experiment with color combinations and pair turquoise with just about anything as it will make heads turn this season.

Is that for the ‘Tacky Sweater’ themed party? Oh it’s not? My bad.

Thursday, November 17th, 2011
While we have still been getting lucky with mid-60 degree weather in early November, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And while Thanksgiving may bring lots of food, fall colors and families together, one thing it also brings is colder weather. I am still having a hard time parting with my wedges, bikinis and sundresses but I am looking forward to new winter boots, trendy new hats, and of course pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks.

Much like many fashion trends, everything at one point in time comes back around. For example; holiday sweaters. Oh yes, the ones that your parents made you wear, that not only were itchy and matched your younger siblings, but had a giant reindeer or snowman plastered on the front. Here, let me remind you.

Do I even need to tell you how awful that is? This is one trend I never thought would come back around, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by anything. I mean, how are you supposed to have a tacky sweater themed party when someone isn’t showing up in these things on a regular basis? And not only are these sweaters a popular trend, the price of a piece of clothing you thought escaped from your past is even more ridiculous in some cases. Take a look.

Moncler Shawl Collar Reindeer Cardigan featured at Nordstrom.com $600.00

$600.00?!!! I know you gasped for air just like I did when I saw that. I honestly don’t think I would be able to take my guy seriously or any other guy for that matter in this reindeer infested cardigan. Could you? No. Next up is a holiday sweater from American Eagle.
AE Reindeer Sweater $49.50
Not nearly as expensive, but almost equally as awful. I really think if my mom had kept my clothes from when I was little, a smaller version of this sweater would be discovered.

Now what kind of fashion blogger would I be if I didn’t offer a more socially acceptable alternative? Certainly not a good one. But luckily I am here to help you around the holidays to pick a sweater that someone is not going to think you are on a dare to wear.

Acceptable printed sweaters- So you want to be a little bit festive with your choice of sweater picking this season? You don’t have to have little snowmen covering your sleeves or reindeer flying from left to right to get the point across that you dressed for the holidays. There are several prints that will still do the job.
MALACHITE SWEATER $69.50 ROXY.COM

The colors in this sweater pretty much cover all of the holiday colors without all the tackiness. It is also available in many other color combinations.

ALPINE SWEATER $59.50 ROXY.COM

What is that? Oh why yes it is a snowflake, but notice that it is the center of the sweater and it doesn’t look like you just walked through a blizzard.

Holiday Hues-The colors red, green, black and winter white are very festive colors that winter brings.

Off-the-shoulder Tunic Sweater $49.50
Angel Bouclé Cowlneck Sweater $59.50
The Flirty Cardi Sweater $39.50

All sweaters available at www.victoriassecret.com

Glitz and Glam- The big trend this season is bling, and lots of it, but sometimes people tend to get carried away covering themselves in sequin dresses, matching sequin shoes and a sequin hat. Way overboard. Here are some cardigans and sweaters that dress up the holiday season with a little glitz.
Miss Me V-Neck Wool Blend Sweater $88.00 www.buckle.com
Long Sleeve Sequin Sweater $59.50 www.express.com
Some more helpful sweater tips? Certainly.
1. My biggest fear when trying on sweaters is that I think they make me look bigger than I really am. But if you pair your bulky sweater with some skinny leg pants and some trendy boots you will be sure to make a positive fashion statement.
2. You don’t have to look like a trashbag that just stepped out of your mom’s closet. Throw on some accessories to give your solid color sweater some personality. Try a sparkly chunky bracelet or even a headband to make your outfit more girly.
3. Try a sweater over top of a dress for a different style than just pants. If it is too cold out throw on a pair of tights.
4. If you are wearing a printed sweater make sure you wear a solid color bottom. You don’t want to look like an explosion of textures and prints.
5. Scarves and hats can be your best friends when trying to accessorize your sweater.
Hope this helps this holiday season when you venture out to go sweater shopping.

Stay classy,
<3 Elizabeth

Fresh Looks for Fall

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

When it comes to the word “slacker,” it could be my middle name in reference to the limited amount of blogging I did this summer. Yes, I could throw out a long list of excuses, but all I am going to say is… “I’m back and I’m sorry.”

Unfortunately my favorite season is over. RIP Summer 2011, you will be dearly missed.

As one season changes into another so do fashion trends. Hopefully everyone has been working hard this summer and was able to save up some extra cash for their new Fall 2011 wardrobe because this season there are some new and exciting colors, trends and accessories in store.

1. Mustard

No not the condiment, the color. The hours I spend all summer long perfecting my sun-kissed glow disappears completely when the weather starts to get cold. So if I were to wear this mustard color, I feel like people would start to think I was sick. However, if you are someone who keeps your tan or cheats and goes to the tanning beds, maybe you could give this color a try. Here are some affordable and trendy items: Figure 1 (Lyra mustard dress from Etsy), figure 2 (mustard yellow lace sweater from Etsy).

2. Lace

Move over Victoria Secret lingerie apparel. You aren’t the only one wearing lace this year. This is one trend you have to be careful with because if you overdo it with the “froufrou,” the joke ends up on you. If there is one thing to say about fashion designer Jason Wu, it would be that he loves him some lace. Take a look at his RTW 2011 Fall collection:  Figure 1, Figure 2.   (Images by: NewYorker)

P.S.- Yes, figure 2 is a mustard colored skirt paired with lace – two trends in one.  Notice how Wu pairs one lace garment with a solid color, avoiding too much pattern clash. Another tip to picking out your lace item is to avoid wearing too much to the color cream because then you just look like your grandma’s curtain/tablecloth and who wants that? Not me.  Unfortunately, we college students can’t always afford to buy Wu’s eclectic taste in lace, but there are some affordable, trendy solutions:  Figure 1 (Lace Book Shorts), figure 2 (Leave It to Me Dress), figure 3 (Twenty Years Bold Skirt), figure 4 (Look Like a Dream Dress).  All items can be found at ModCloth.

3. Vintage Chokers

Dresses from the 60’s and 70’s have yet to fall out of style this year and with that being said, add a choker necklace and you have the very next trend. And this is no joke when I say the bigger and bulkier the choker, the more of a statement you are going to make. Here’s a few I really liked: Figure 1, figure 2.  (Choker necklaces found on Etsy).

4. Bright Colors

This is one trend I never get tired of seeing from season to season, and this Fall color is one thing that is not lacking. Just because it isn’t summer anymore doesn’t mean you should trade in your reds, yellows and oranges for browns, grays and blacks. Much like lace color should be worn in moderation. Take a look at some of the bold and bright colors incorporated in DKNY’s Fall 2011 collection: Figure 1, figure 2. (DKNY Collection- Photo Credit).

Where to buy your bright colored clothes to stand out this Fall 2011?

Figure 1, figure 2, figure 3, figure 4, figure 5!  (All items can be found at TopShop).

5. Plaids and Polka Dots

Tartan plaid and girly polka dots are two prints that seem to have taken off for Fall/Winter 2011. Take a look at the runway and how designers incorporated both designs in their collections and find out how you can get the look for less: Figure 1.

Look for less? Items all available at ModCloth:

Splash Into Summer

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Well, summer is officially here and what could be better than sunshine, sand and salt water? Oh I know. It’s the new fashion trends – and with every passing season something exciting seems to blossom in the world of fashion. But when it comes to this season’s fashion, the spectrum seems to be endless. Here are just a few of the most popular trends.

Floral Print

Even before the summer season officially kicked off, floral print seemed to be covering girls on campus from head to toe this past spring—literally. Girls were wearing the floral sunglasses, tops, high-waisted skirts and even their shoes were covered in plant life.  What floral print does for an outfit is add a little bit of a feminine touch. Even the top designers are including floral print in their Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Take a look straight from the runway:  (Figure  1, D&G), (Figure 2, Erdem), (Figure 3, Jil Sander).

But let’s face it. We are on a college budget. So what we are looking for is the cheap, but fashionable alternative to the newest summer statements:   (Figure 4- Floral Escapade Dress Forever21- $12.50), (Figure 6- Floral Slub Top from Forever21 -$13.80), (Figure 7 – AE Floral Pocket Cami $24.50), (Figure 8- AE Floral Sweetheart Romper $39.50), (Figure 9 – AE Lace-trimmed Floral Cami – $24.50)

Tribal Print

Not only has floral print been a popular pattern for summer, tribal print has also stepped foot into closets around campus. Want to add a little culture to your wardrobe? This print will do just that. So if you aren’t looking for the girly feminine style that floral print provides maybe try something a little more adventurous and ethnic. Here are some trendy options: (Figure 10- Tribal Cuffed Shorts Forever21 $15.80), (Figure 11- Tribal Ikat Print Dress Forever21 $13.50).

Bright Colors

And finally we have a trend that is back from the ‘80s. Can you guess it? If you guessed neon/bright colors, you are right. If there is one thing that comes to mind when you think of summer it is bright and sunny, so why not dress the part? Many of these lively and vibrant colors were featured on the S/S 2011 fashion runways with oranges and corals being most popular. Just take a look at the color blocking on the S/S 2011 runway. If this doesn’t scream bright and bold I don’t know what does!

So you want the pulsating and vibrant look for less?

(Figure 12- Hera One Shoulder Forever21 $22.80), (Figure 13- H&M Multistriped Dress $14.95), (Figure 14- Fierce Blouson Dress Forever21 $27.80), (Figure 15- Sparkle and Fade Paperbag Shorts Urban Outfitters $48.00), (Figure 16- BDG Cigarette High-Rise Jean Urban Outfitters $58.00), (Figure 17- Volcom Frochickie Short $24.99), (Figure 18- RVCA Lotti Shorts $48.50)

Just like mom’s, but healthier

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

I have to be honest, when I am at school I miss the food my mom makes. I mean of course I miss it because it requires absolutely no effort on my part, but also because some foods are just better when mom makes them. They are comforting and make me feel like I am a little kid again. I don’t care how much I am teased for still eating the foods I ate when I was little I will never give up grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza, or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I have just made some healthier modifications. ☺
Healthy Grilled Cheese
Ingredients
2 piece of Wheat or healthy Bread
1 piece of cheese
1-2 slices of tomatoes
Directions
Take 2 pieces of bread and toast them in a toaster.
When the bread pops up place a piece of cheese in between the bread and let the heat melt the cheese and then it’s done!
Add a slice of tomato. It’s easy to take the sandwich apart to place inside.

For Those Who Live in the Dorms…

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

I am lucky to say that “dorm life” for me has long been over. I have been living in my own apartment off-campus for the past 2 years and let me just say; it has its advantages and disadvantages. I attended Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina when I lived in the dorms and the one good thing about that was “The Commons.” This was a student cafeteria that offered just about any kind of food you wanted. There was the “southern” section which consisted of fried chicken, grits, waffles, etc. Healthy huh? Then there was the pizza section, the salad bar, main courses, breakfast for dinner, and build-your-own sandwiches. I had an unlimited meal plan which most students did as well and there was even a late night menu. Plus it was within a few feet of my dorm.
It was so easy to turn down the salad bar and go straight to the unhealthy stuff; the French fries, the chicken, the hushpuppies. How do you turn that down? Easy. When you go to put on your favorite pair of jeans and you can no longer zip them up. Embarrassingly enough, this happened to me and many other girls in my hall. So my roommate and I decided to buy healthier snacks and started finding ways to make our own food minus the deep frying, heavy butter, and extra fat. I offer you some healthy techniques the next time you are going to your university’s version of “The Commons” just so you don’t have to invest in new jeans!
1. Don’t be so opposed to the salad bar. It is so easy to walk away from the green leafy lettuce and fresh vegetables, but try to give it a chance. Try spicing up your salad by adding fresh cut turkey or grilled chicken breast. Be experimental with your salad.
2. Always eat breakfast-Haven’t you heard breakfast jump starts your metabolism? Well it is true. Instead of pouring sugary syrup all over your pancakes try a scoop of yogurt on them or some fresh fruit. Also make a simple adjustment to skim or 1% milk for your cereal rather than whole milk.
3. WATER, WATER, WATER!- It is so easy to just go up to the soda machine especially when there are free refills, but do you even need the explanation on how healthy soda is? One glass of water before every meal. Majority of the time you feel hungry, you are usually thirsty. So when you drink a glass of water before a meal you won’t eat as much. If the bubbly carbonation is just too much to give up… Try regular soda water.

The healthy snacks always taste the worst! I mean who wants sugar-free, fat-free cookies? It defeats the purpose. Plus it doesn’t even taste real. While experimenting with many brands and different snacks these were my personal favorites that didn’t make me feel like cardboard would have been a better option. ☺
1. Cookie Fix? Fig Newmans-These are a healthier alternative with less sugar and organic ingredients. They also offer a fat-free variety of flavors.
2. Salt Fix? Whole Grain Goldfish- “The snack that smiles back,” is still smiling. Everything you loved about Goldfish before you will still love now. Believe me. One serving of Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Goldfish Crackers (55 crackers) contains only 140 calories, 5 grams of total fat, 20 grams of total carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein. Unlike regular Goldfish, they contain 2 grams of fiber.
3. Something sweet? General Mills Fiber One Bars- Surprisingly these taste just like the original chocolate chip granola bars I ate when I was a kid. My favorite flavor is the oats and chocolate or the chocolate mocha. (Note: Do not consume more than one of these a day… Think FIBER. I learned the hard way. haha)
4. Also any of the 100 calorie snacks.

And then there is Happy Hour…

Monday, October 11th, 2010

I turned 21 this summer and I have to be honest drinking in moderation was not exactly top priority. I was not one to turn down a cocktail or cheap beer on special. Once I got back up at school I wanted to try all the new bars that I was never able to experience and find out which places had the best happy hour specials. I discovered a few simple tricks to still be healthy when it comes to happy hour. Thankfully!

Drink in moderation- My favorite drink this summer was called Electric Lemonade. It consisted of blueberry vodka and obviously, lemonade. But I realized the amount of sugar this contained and switched to blueberry vodka and club soda. Why? This has less calories and the carbonation fills you up faster causing you to drink less and in result spend less. You can also try switching to light beers, opt for red wine, or substitute diet cola for the regular stuff.

Pick something you will sip on- When it comes to sipping the key for me was picking wine or beer. Too much carbonation made my stomach hurt if I drank too fast and wine is just not something you are supposed to chug. If I was sipping on something the longer I had the drink which led to the less I would have to buy.

Here are a few of my favorite low-calorie recipes…
